Please join us in congratulating the Desert View Educator of the Year for 2015-16; Mrs. Dia Bernabe.
Collaboration has always been at the center of Mrs. Bernabe’s practice. Whether working with only one other team member or being the lynchpin on a team with two teachers who have never taught fifth grade before. Mrs. Bernabe steals and shares lessons and best practices with equal enthusiasm and our whole school benefits.
Mrs. Bernabe is always willing to improve her practice. When asked to, she took a week out of her summer last year to attend a training in Portland to better extend the top fifth grade students at Desert View. Her Scottish Storyline lessons have drawn enormous positive reaction from parents and students alike.
On last year’s Smarter Balance test Mrs. Bernabe’s students performed exceedingly well. Her students outpaced their peers from around the state passing their state exam at a rate 19% above the state average in Language Arts with (over ¼ of her students reaching the exceeding plateau), 22% above the state average in math (almost half of her students reached the exceeding standard) and she outpaced the state by 19% in science, where 93% of her students were deemed proficient or exceeding the state benchmark (in real numbers that is 25 out of her 27 students).
Way to go Mrs. Bernabe!
